We may not be able to prevent a disaster, but we can certainly; mitigate, or reduce it impact by being prepared for it. Management of disasters is very important to save lives and property and protect our environment.
‘Disaster management’ involves the process of being prepared
for disasters, reducing the impact of disasters and to deal with the situation
after a disaster has struck.
When a disaster strikes, help form outside takes time to
reach the spot. So, the affected areas have to organize support from
surrounding areas to cope with the initial blow. Let’s read about some measures
that can be adopted to avert disasters and cope with them.
Preparedness at Government Level.
- Government should set up a separate department for Disaster Management, set aside funds for it and for relief operations.
- This department should develop early warning and forecasting systems for different types of disasters.
- Special training should be given to the staff to implement relief measures and help victims and survivors of disasters.
- Organizations to handle food and medicines and effectively distribute them to the affected areas should be set up. NGO,s should be encouraged to participate in such tasks.
- Rehabilitation measures for the affected victims should be adopted immediately and planned in advance.
- Mass education program should be conducted to make public aware of disasters. And how to cope with them.
- Schools should be instructed to educate children about disasters and their management and children in turn should be asked to spread the message to their families.
Preparedness in the Community:
- People should be aware of the local hazards of the area they are living in.
- A committee responsible for preparedness and relief operations should be reacted in every community.
- A local shelter and a place to work as a control room should be identified if a disaster strikes.
- Basic provisions to sustain through the initial stages of disaster should be stocked.
- Training program should be conducted in schools, offices and factories. Mock drills to test preparedness and response to a disaster should be conducted regularly.
