The rationale behind cloud computing comes from utilities
like electricity and water. An article in the 1960’s talked about computing as
a utility which can be tapped from the grid like water or electricity.
For starters the concept of cloud computing can be described
as the ability to tap IT utilities like machines database or storage from a
central grid of computing. You don’t have to bother about buying and storing
the inventory of the entire IT infrastructure just inform your cloud service
provider what you want and “hey Presto “you get it. You pay for what you use
and this saves a lot of cash. Migrating to cloud has become very easy nowadays
due to the large number of user friendly cloud services which are provided at
reasonably low cost like Amazon, Google, Microsoft and few other niche players.
Cloud commuting services are “on-demand” services provided
with the help of internet and can be divided into a set of “utilities as a
service”.
- Software as a services- (SaaS):- This provides useful standalone application access without the need of any maintenance or any additional software or hardware. Many businesses use SaaS model to interact with customers.
- Infrastructure as a service –( IaaS):- This is a fulfillment model in which storage, servers, hardware and networking elements are outsourced to cloud service providers by clients. Clients pay only for the exact use of the service.
- Platform as a service- (PaaS):- Allows clients to develop, manage and run applications on platforms provided by the service provider by the service provider without bothering about maintenance of infrastructure.
- Database as a service – (DaaS):- Provides database access and storage to clients whenever it is asked for.
