Photoshop can open and save images in many different file formats.
Formats are ways of saving the information in a file so that it can be used by
other applications, printed or placed on a web page for use on the internet.
You have learnt that every
program has a particular file extension. For example MS Word automatically
gives a .doc extension. a file extension indicates the file format in other
words. It tells you in which program was created.
Photoshop can save a file in
more than one format each having a different file size and quality. Gives below
are some common file formats with brief definitions.
PSD (.psd): This is the default
Photoshop file format. This has a medium file size and the images saved in this
format are of good printable quality.
TIFF (.tiif): The full form of
TIFF is Tag Image File Format. This file format gives you a high-quality image
but has a much bigger file size.
Bitmap (.bmp): This is a standard graphic file format for Windows.
GIF (.gif): The full form of GIF is Graphical Interchange Format. It
is one of the three most common graphics formats used for web publishing.
JPEG (.jpg): JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Expert Group. This
format has the smallest file size and if of poor quality. This is mainly used
for web publishing.
PDF (.pdf): Documents created in this kind of format can be read
across different programs. The full form of PDF is Portable Document Format and
is an Adobe Acrobat file.
