Acids react with compounds such as potassium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate or calcium bicarbonate to liberate carbon dioxide gas, with a brisk effervescence leaving behind salt solution. This property of acids is widely used in soda acid fire extinguishers since carbon dioxide does not support combustion.255 A soda acid fire extinguisher consists of a glass bottle filled with sulphuric acid. This bottle is placed over sodium bicarbonate solution placed in a closed container. When the knob of the container strikes the acid bottle the bottle breaks and thus the acid reacts with baking soda and liberates carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide thus formed is forced out with the liquid through the nozzle to extinguish the fire.
