Submarines are vessels that can travel underwater. When the submarines want to dive in its ballast tanks are filled with water making it heavier than the amount of water needed to fill the space taken by the submarine. Once it is submerged the hydroplanes are adjusted to control the angle of dive. When it reaches the right depth, the hydroplanes are set to horizontal. To rise to the surface, the hydroplanes are set to direct upwards. When it almost reaches the surface, compressed air is pumped into the ballast tanks, forcing the water out. Submarine use battery powered electric motors while they are underwater and diesel engines when cruising one the surface. Nuclear submarines have nuclear reactors on board to generate heat to drive a steam turbine.
