After the invention of steam engines in 1700s they were mainly used to drive pumps. Richard Trevithick a Cornish mining engineer built a horseless carriage driven by steam engine in 1801 which ran on roads. George Stephenson, a British engineer built the first successful steam locomotive in 1813. It was opend as the first public rain was in 1821 and ran between Stockton Darling ton at the speed of 24km/hour. In 1929 he made the locomotive known as Rocket which could run at a speed of 57km/hours.
