Around 700 AD the first books were printed in China and Korea. They were earlier known as scrolls in which the writing was printed with wooden blocks. Type made of porcelain was invented in China in about 1050 AD and then metal type was invented in Korea. Books first reached Europe when they were first printed in Germany in about 1450. A German, Johann Gutenberg began to use metal type and a printing press to print books. The first full length printed book was the Gutenberg Bible printed in 1454. Only 21 copies of the book exist now.
