The game of chess becomes very popular in the middle Ages and all the
pieces used in the game have been named from life. Chess originated in India
and the pieces were named kings, vazirs, chariots, elephants and foot soldiers.
The game is an imitation of military life with attacks, retreats, defense and
capture. The game was carried to Persia and from there it spread to Arabia and
Europe with gradual changes in the rule. Today the game of chess has kings,
queens, rooks, knights, bishops and pawns. King and queen are considered to be
the most important and powerful pieces on each side. The king is not captured,
but checkmated to mark the end of a game. The word checkmate comes from the Persian
words, ‘shah-mat’, which means the king, is captured.
