Sherlock Holmes is taken to be one of the most famous
detectives of all time. But the fact is that he was just a fictional character
created by the novelist, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who lived from 1859 to 1930.
Sherlock Holmes becomes so popular and caught people’s imagination, that it was
thought that he really existed and they looked from his house at 221B Baker
Street, London. The stories, mostly set in London at the end of the 19th
century, describe Holmes as an odd and very different person with amazing
powers of concentration, who smoked a pipe and played violin. He had an
assistant, Dr. Watson, who was not very brilliant.
