World War II ended in 1945, but the victorious sides were soon quarrelling. The heavyweights USA and the then USSR grew suspicious about each other. They began an arms race and disagreed on many things. This is what was known as the cold war. After the World War II, Europe got divided into groups.
One was the communist group of the East headed by the USSR and the non-communist west group, headed by USA. The struggle between the East and West continued in many parts of the world. The Korean War (1950-53) and the Vietnam War (1945-76) was a trial of strength of the two sides. With the breakup of USSR, the cold war too got dissipated.
