Sumer was in the lower part of Mesopotamia, which is now known as Iraq. The Sumerians inhabited this place before 3500 BC and held power till about 2000 BC. The place of origin of Sumerians is not known, but probably they came from present-day Iran or Turkey.
They built cities like Eridu, Uruk, and Ur. The ruins of Uruk have shown us the earliest form of writing which was done on clay tablets. Initially, Sumerians wrote in pictograms, which are stylized drawings of objects.
Later, they began using simpler symbols that represented sounds. The Sumerians were very fine craftsmen too.
