Mahatma is a Sanskrit word which means ‘great soul’. The term was affectionately applied to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who was the most independent from British in 1947. Born in 1869, Gandhiji studied law in London and went to South Africa to work. He preached a policy of non-violence as he led campaigns against racial discrimination. He returned to India in 1915 and joined the freedom movement. India finally achieved independence in 1947. Gandhiji tried to stop the violence that cropped up between Hindus and Muslims but was assassinated in 1948.
